Presented at The
College Preparatory School "Debater of the Year" award has been renamed, "The
Julia Burke Debater of the Year" award. The Foundation has added
a $500 college scholarship for the recipient of the award.
This fund is used to enhance the nationally prominent debate
program at The College Preparatory School and to provide additional students
the opportunity for national competition. The new Julia Burke Debate Center
is nearly three times the size of the old office with enough space for students
to work and even hold a practice round. The Julia Burke Foundation was pleased
to assist with this upgrade, including a handsome trophy case to display
the nationally prominent team's many awards.

The Bay Area Urban Debate League Program establishes high school policy debate teams at schools that are economically disadvantaged and is part of the National Urban Debate League.
The Julia Burke Foundation has sponsored fourteen Bay Area Urban Debate League students to attend summer debate institutes nationwide and has assisted with other program operations. There were six accomplished debaters also recognized as Julia Burke Scholars but who were unable to attend the institutes. The students were provided with the opportunity both to build friendships with debaters nation-wide, and to strengthen the research, analytical, and critical thinking skills necessary for debate competition.
Guests attending last year’s Memorial Walk included two
Julia Burke Scholars. Jael Myrick, on the right, and David Wasserman attended
the National High School Institute at Northwestern University during the summer
of 2002. The Julia Burke Scholars are looking forward to successful college
careers.
